These are some of the ouds I have made over the years. My first one was
made in 1968, a crude copy of a friend's Karibyan. It looked bad but played fine
and is still being played today . I kept trying to make a better oud and am
still trying to make them better each time.
#13, Turkish style oud made in 1975 Patrick Olsen of Pangia, playing #14. made in 1976 #16, made in Feburary, 1976 in Santa Cruz, CA Made in 1978, this is based on a 1958 Georges Nahat the back of the ivory oud #18, a Turkish style made in 1980 #20, made in 2002, based on a 1902 Hana Nahat
Based on the Karibyan design. Those roses took days to carve. I didn't have a camera before this so I don't have pictures of any older ouds. If you know of one, please send me some pictures! This oud was originally made for Paul O'hanesian, and was later owned by Mimi Spencer. Spyros Camateros, my Nahat History collegue played it while studying with Mimi. It has a whalebone fingerboard, and a maple splice in the face under the 1st string. Visit Pat's site at www.pangiaraks.com and buy some of his CD's. I traded this for a 1953 GMC pickup truck while I was a carpenter. I kept the truck until 1998, but the original owner still has this oud. I used some purchased herringbone inlay and used some hotam (geometric pattern) diamonds recovered from broken ouds I had acquired. Some more salvaged triangles and some pretty nice scroll work, don't ya think? I used pre-ban ivory for all the inlay, except whalebone for the eyun. The face edge tiles number approximately 1,500 pieces and took 35 hours to install (non-stop, 5 pots of coffee and 6 cheeseburgers!) The entire oud was built in the back yard and kitchen of a small 2 room apartment in Berkley, CA. It took 3 months every night after work and all weekend long. The neck has a rosewood stringer and the sound is reinforced with twin 3 axis transducer mounted inside at each end of the bridge. The output is wired through a stereo plug and I use a custom cable that splits at the amplifier to attenuate the pickups separately. This allows me to balance the volume while reducing distorsion by using less gain. There's strips of rosewood inlaid in the back of the peg box and the rosewood pegs have ivory diamond end plugs. An Arabic size with a shallow body that is easy to hold. The face is made from 5 pieces of 100 year old piano spruce. The back is Lemon wood and Hawaiian Koa nut. Electrified with a 3 axis transducer mounted inside and wired out through a standard phone jack that uses standard electric guitar cables. Recently refurbished, this is my main ensemble instrument.
This oud was built using a 35 year old soundboard of German spruce. The braces were made from 100 year old piano spruce. This oud is so loud I was asked to keep it down while demonstrating it at a guitar convention (from the next room!)
